BERLIN (Reuters) – A man lost 23,000 euros ($31,180) to the wind when an envelope with the money he had stuck in the passenger seat pocket of his convertible blew away during a test drive in northern Germany.

The cash — in 500, 200, and 100 euro notes — fluttered across the motorway in the midst of speeding traffic near the city of Hanover, police said.

The man, 23, contacted police immediately, who then blocked the motorway in both directions for nearly half an hour. Eight police officers assisted the man in retrieving his notes and were able to recover 20,000 euros.

“The remaining 3,000 euros have not been found,” a police spokeswoman said, but warned treasure hunters of searching for any bills and keeping them, saying that was illegal.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Sound-effects specialist Wayne Allwine, who followed in the footsteps of Walt Disney to provide the falsetto voice of Mickey Mouse for the past 32 years, has died, Walt Disney Co said Wednesday.

Allwine succumbed to complications from diabetes at UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles Monday. He was 62.

He was only the third person to lend his voice to the famed rodent. Disney himself started voicing Mickey Mouse in 1928, when he made his talking debut in “Steamboat Willie.” Jimmy Macdonald took over the responsibilities in 1947 and handed over the reins to his protege Allwine in 1977.

Allwine provided Mickey’s voice for such movies as “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” (1983), “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988), and “The Prince and the Pauper” (1990). He also brought Mickey to life for Disney theme parks, television, radio and live stage events.

“Wayne dedicated his entire professional life to Disney, and over the last 32 years, gave so much joy, happiness and comfort to so many around the world by giving voice to our most beloved, iconic character, Mickey Mouse ,” Disney Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger said.

Born in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale in 1947, Allwine joined Disney in 1966, working his way up from a job in the mail room. He worked under sound-effects expert Macdonald for seven-and-a-half years, editing such Disney films as “Splash” (1984) and “Three Men and a Baby” (1987).

“Mickey’s the real star,” Allwine once said of his job. “You know you just have to love the little guy while you have him, because he won’t be yours forever.”

Allwine is survived by his wife, Russi Taylor, who provides the voice of Minnie Mouse, and five children from previous marriages.

A policeman in downtown Amsterdam. A burglar had to call Dutch police to free him.

THE HAGUE (AFP) – A burglar had to call Dutch police to free him after finding himself trapped in an attempt to break into a school in Amsterdam, police said Wednesday.

The 26-year-old “got into the school through the roof and a small window” on Tuesday night, police spokesman Ebe van der Land told AFP.

“He was unable to leave the same way and found himself trapped in an inner court, his exit blocked by a high gate.

“He said he did not have the strength left to scale the gate, and so called the police.”

Officers freed the man before locking him up.

SALT LAKE CITY – Never mind the ick factor, a Utah boy is trying to get into the record books by covering his face with live snails.

Eleven-year-old Fin Keheler allowed 43 of the slimy mollusks to be put on his face Saturday.

He wants Guinness World Records to verify his effort.

The Guinness website says the record set in 2007 for snails on the face for 10 seconds is eight.

The boy says he has since learned the record was 36.

Fin made three attempts on Saturday.

As he sat back in a reclining chair, snails gathered from neighbours’ gardens were carefully placed on his face.

Those that remained for at least 10 seconds were counted.

His family is sending witness statements, video and media coverage to Guinness this week.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The world’s fanciest whiskers are coming to Alaska so their owners can strut their manly stuff in a land that has long appreciated furry faces.

On Friday, the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships will come to Anchorage, where more than 200 competitors from 12 countries will brandish facial hair ranging from delicate Salvador Dali-style mustaches to bushy full beards.

Seasoned competitors say Germans have the facial hair to beat.

“They take it very seriously. It is an age-old tradition there to have beards,” said Bob Gengler, a 44-year-old physical therapist in Anchorage who sports a big bushy beard.

The Germans’ 20-person contigent this year will not include Elmar Weisser, who is renowned for his ingenuity in the freestyle full beard category. In 2005 in Berlin, he styled his beard into the shape of the Brandenburg Gate. Two years later in Brighton, England, his beard formed London’s Tower Bridge.

The Robo Taxi — which hopefully behaves nothing like RoboCop — is a robotic taxi designed for large metropolitan cities.

Conceived by designer Kubik Petr, the vehicle holds only two passengers with a minimal amount of luggage. It’s driven by two electric motors connected to the vehicle’s back wheels. The car would be built from the lightest of materials and can operate for up to 20 hours.
Upon entering the cab, passengers set their destination using the taxi’s touch screen interface. I imagine they would pay the same way.

While I think it’s a fascinating concept, I’d mostly miss the Grand Theft Auto-style ride you usually get from a human-powered taxi.
