A modern-day Romeo finally got his girl when the northern Italian city of Verona opened up the balcony where Juliet supposedly pined for her lover as a venue for weddings.

The 13th century mansion of the Cappello family – believed to be the Capulets of William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet – has for years been a place of pilgrimage for lovers worldwide, who have scrawled love messages on its walls.

Now, Verona’s town council is offering couples the chance to follow in the footsteps of Shakespeare’s “star-crossed lovers” and see for themselves “what light from yonder window breaks”.

The first Romeo to take advantage of the offer was soccer player star Luca Ceccarelli, who plays for local team Verona.

“I feel very emotional. You know, marriage always gives strong emotions especially in a situation like this,” said a beaming Ceccarelli, before exchanging rings with his Juliet, Irene Lamforti. “We hope that this brings us a lot of luck.”

But it does not come cheaply. A normal civil wedding licence in Italy costs about 45 euros: for non-European citizens the Verona licence will cost nearly 900 euros, with EU non-Verona couples paying approximately 700 euros.

At that price, lovers will hope for a happy ending.

A Connecticut family has been saved from a house fire by a new bride who rushed inside through thick smoke while wearing her wedding gown.

Officials say Georgette Clemons had just left her wedding reception Sunday evening when she spotted smoke coming from a Bridgeport home.

Clemons got out of the car she was riding in and ran into the home. She says a woman was yelling about her animals and didn’t want to leave, so she had to pull her out.

As firefighters arrived and battled the blaze after members of the Eitelberg family were rescued, Clemons was nearby folding her blackened wedding dress.

Clemons says she messed up her shoes, but says that’s no big deal because everyone is safe.

A wildlife sanctuary owner in America has told of his decision to chose a very unusual friend to be ‘best man’ at his wedding.

The happy couple had an unusual choice for ring ‘bearer’

Casey Anderson rescued grizzly bear Brutus from being put down at an overpopulated wildlike park.  He was so taken by his new companion that he built a sanctuary in Montana where Brutus could “grow up being a bear”.  Anderson now runs the Montana Grizzly Sanctuary and takes in other rescued bears.

But Brutus is the main attraction.  He is used as an assistant to teach park visitors about grizzly bears and conservation.  And the friendly bear has even appeared on TV and in films.  One such role – in the film Pretty Ugly People – was responsible for Anderson meeting his wife Missi Pyle.

Brutus became such a part of Anderson’s life that he decided to have the animal as his best man at his wedding.  He did not walk down the aisle with the pair but did happily pose for wedding photos, eat wedding cake and entertain the other guests.

Anderson admits he feels he owes a lot to his relationship with Brutus.  “I know that I have saved Brutus’ life, but he saved mine too,” he explains.  “He gave me purpose, and the inspiration to try and make a difference in the world.”
